Each year, cows million in Africa die from the East Coast fever. The disease is spread by the bites of ticks. Young cattle are most at risk, they can die within days.

Can farmers and ranchers lose up to half or more of the calves to East Coast fever. Disease on a large scale in one of eleven countries. Experts say that these animals now threatens 10000000 more in new areas, including southern Sudan.

Researchers first developed an experimental vaccine against East Coast fever in thirty years. The vaccine works through a process called "infection and treatment."

And all animals infected with parasites and treated with antibiotics at the same time. This keeps the disease from developing countries.

Theileriosis control means a better life in areas that received the vaccine.

For example, a vaccine to a group of Maasai pastoralists in northern Tanzania for about seven years. Used to lose three-quarters of neonatal calves each year. Now, more than survive. As a result, many people to sell cattle out, and use the money to pay for school for their children.

But making the vaccine more widely - it was difficult - especially in rural areas. Resorted to farmers for supplies produced in the nineties. Recently there was a shortage.

Livestock made by the International Institute for Research on million doses at the request of African leaders. But this offer is only temporary. Another problem is that the vaccine must be kept very cold.

Now a non-profit organization, the Global Alliance for Livestock Veterinary Medicines, and attempts to develop production and reduce costs. GALVmed spokesman Hamid Nauru says mobile phones have reduced the barriers to distribution.

He said: "Now, with cellular technology, most people we see all the cell phones and call the agent and delivery that can meet them in a particular place and carry out vaccination for them."

Vaccine is not cheap. But he said Hamid Nauru Sponsors meet for the sale of the bull and use the money to vaccinate all the animals they have.

Realize that they are getting their money: a cow is worth almost twice as if it were vaccinated. The goal is to have people on the development of local companies to provide vaccines. And supports the efforts of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the British government.

And it's British agriculture VOA report.
